Application for the UTeachEngineering
Engineering Summer Institute for Teachers (ESIT)

UT Privacy Policy

Thank you for your interest in applying to UTeachEngineering's Engineering Summer Institute for Teachers (ESIT).

This innovative professional development opportunity for secondary engineering teachers comprises two courses that will be delivered over the span of six weeks at The University of Texas at Austin, The University of Texas at Dallas or The University of Texas at El Paso. Participants should expect to spend 40 hours per week engaged in active class and lab work and many additional hours completing out-of-class readings and projects.

The ESIT application process will be competitive with selection based on a candidate’s demonstrated academic capacity and potential to grow into a teacher leader with expertise in content- and inquiry-based pedagogy. Applicants selected for the program will receive, upon successful completion of their ESIT, both a $3000 stipend and continuing education credits (UT Austin) or other appropriate credits (UT Dallas, UT El Paso).

The Application Process and Deadlines

Please provide all of the requested information in this online application form. Teachers who complete the application process by November 15 will be notified of their selection status no later than December 15. Teachers who apply later than November 15 will be considered as part of a rolling admission process and notified of their status at a later date.

Required: Your Personal Statement

After completing all required fields on this form, you will be directed to another page where you will provide a personal statement explaining your interest in this program and in secondary engineering education. We recommend that you prepare this statement ahead of time so that you can simply cut and paste it into the provided field.

Required: Your School’s Plan for Integrating Secondary Engineering

After submitting your personal statement, you will be directed to a third page to upload a pdf file of a letter, signed by your school principal, which meets the following guidelines:

  • If your school has a plan for integrating secondary engineering education into its curriculum, this letter should describe that plan in as much detail as possible.
  • If your school does not yet have a defined plan for integrating engineering into its curriculum, this letter may describe the school’s commitment to planning for such integration over the coming year (e.g., by convening a working group within the science department to project engineering course enrollment numbers and produce a detailed plan for implementing courses).
  • In either case, the letter should specify your anticipated role in the school’s plan.

If you do not have the ability to create and upload a pdf file, you will be given directions for submitting this letter by mail.
